10 of February, 7 p.m. Kaunas filharmony hall, L. Sapiegos str. 5 Rob Lutes – guitar, vacal Rob MacDonald – Electric and acoustic guitars, Mandolin, Dobro Evoking a raw honesty in his voice and the written word, Rob Lutes has gained a following in his native Canada and in the US as a roots musician of substance. Lutes’s lyrically rich and hook-laden songs span the spectrum of Americana influences. His soulful lyrics and vocals, deftly married with his indelible melodies and accomplished musicianship have established his reputation as a performer of note. The Montreal-based, maritime-born artist spent ten years as a writer/editor, before discovering that songwriting and performing was what he was called to do full time. Evolving his own signature style with his richly textured vocals and earthy feel, Rob steadily gained ground nationally in Canada by playing prestigious festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Ottawa BluesFest and the Stan Rogers Festival. Rob has also been featured in various Canadian television appearances and national radio broadcasts, and has had several of his songs recorded by other artists. In Canada he has released three CD's, Gravity in 2000, Middle Ground in 2002 and Ride the Shadows in 2006. Rob’s recognition continues to grow both at home and in the United States. In 2001, Rob won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Songwriting competition in Kerrville, Texas. In 2004, he won The Philadelphia Songwriters Project Road Song contest, resulting in appearances at both the WXPN Singer Songwriter Weekend and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Rob has garnered nominations for Album of the Year, Performance of the Year and Folk-Blues Artist of the Year from Le Net Blues in Quebec. The Toronto Blues Society nominated him as Songwriter of the Year in 2003. And in Billy Block's 2004 Americana Contest in Nashville, the Rob Lutes Band finished second for Best Americana Band. “He will soon be counted amongst the ranks of the best in the industry, a rare talent that keeps getting better with each project released” says Hello Darlin’ Productions promoter Matt Large. Greg Quill of the Toronto Star deemed Lutes’ 2007 studio effort Ride the Shadows “a brilliantly understated gem distinguished by a warm and raspy voice, honest and eloquent lyrics, and evocative acoustic guitar work…among the best of the year's roots/blues crop.” The Ottawa Citizen named the CD “one of the Top Ten in Canada for 2007”. Following on the success of that work, which also took him to Europe – with a licensing deal from Rounder Europe – and across Canada, the former Kerrville New Folk winner is preparing to go into studio to record his much-awaited fourth CD with noted Boston-area producer David Goodrich (Chris Smither, Peter Mulvey). Lutes and musical partner, legendary Montreal resophonic guitarist Rob MacDonald, are also becoming widely known for their inspiring and impassioned live performances. After more than 10 years together, the duo displays an almost instinctual musical connection on the stage. Lutes states: “At this point, Rob and I can read one another other’s playing so well, it’s sort of like the two of us are playing one instrument.” Following recording and release of a fourth studio album in Fall 2008, Lutes and MacDonald will tour in Canada, Europe and the U.S. through 2009.
